The island of Ibiza is one of the recommended places to travel and practice water activities. Sailing, snorkelling, fishing and, of course, scuba diving are some of the sports you can enjoy in these crystal-clear waters, with pleasant temperatures almost all year round. That's why scuba diving is a perfect sporting plan no matter what time of year you visit the island.
Diving in Ibiza stands out for the great visibility offered by its waters due to the meadows of Posidonia oceanica, a plant that grows on the seabed of the Mediterranean and which is very important to protect when doing water sports and sailing due to its great ecological value. Diving in Ibiza also allows you to discover the beaches and sites, as there are interesting routes for all levels of divers in a wide variety of areas along the island's 200 kilometres of coastline. The routes depend on the level of the divers, although it is possible to do the so-called "baptisms" and Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver courses in Ibiza, as well as other more advanced and specialised courses. There are numerous diving centres on the island where it is possible to rent the equipment necessary for the dive and whose professionals guide divers to the best places to discover the seabed. These are some of the places to discover Ibiza that we recommend below:
- Lladó South
Among the most popular options is Lladó Sur, located about four kilometres sailing from the Marina Ibiza marina. In the anchorage around this islet, which forms part of the Los Lladó complex, the depth does not usually exceed 30 metres. On the route, which is suitable for beginners, it is possible to see moray eels, octopus and castanets.
- The ship Don Pedro
Also located just a few kilometres from the port of Ibiza by boat are two small islets known as Dados. The smaller of these, Dado Pequeño, was struck and wrecked in 2007 by the ship Don Pedro, which sank to a depth of 45 metres at its deepest point. This accident resulted in one of the largest wrecks, with a length of approximately 142 metres, that can be seen in the Mediterranean Sea. Navigation around the ship is completely external.
- Small Dice
One of the most popular dive sites in Ibiza is precisely the already named Dado Pequeño due to the great diversity of marine species such as damselflies and damselfish that can be observed in this environment.
- Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell
The islets of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell form part of the island's nature reserve and are one of the most beautiful places for diving or snorkelling, although special care must be taken not to damage the Posidonia oceanica. In these places, moreover, it is not possible to disembark except with authorisation. In this area, divers can discover the pointed massif called La Ajuga, the water mountain La Bota d'es Vedrà, the islet of La Galera and the exciting route through the Cañones d'es Vedranell canyons.
- The Sponge
The sponge is another of the islets that dot the outskirts of the island of Ibiza and where you can also practice aquatic activities such as diving, ideal for beginners. With a maximum depth of around 30 metres, on this route you can observe large rock formations and species such as sea bass, sea cicadas and also sea sponges that inhabit the seabed in the southeast of the island.
- Ses Caletes Caves
In the north of the island, near the tourist and coastal village of Portinatx, is one of the places to get to know Ibiza and also to carry out aquatic activities. The Ses Caletes caves allow you to discover a gallery and a tunnel with holes through which beams of light pour in, creating a magical spectacle for divers. It is an ideal place to observe a large meadow of posidonia.
- Marian Platform
Another of the recommended places to travel and dive in Ibiza is the so-called "Mariana" platform which, together with the Don Pedro ship, is another of the hidden and diveable treasures of the Mediterranean. It is also possible to visit this platform, an abandoned fish farm dedicated to the breeding of sea bream, which sank after being abandoned at the end of the 1990s. This enormous concrete structure, which is located in the channel that separates Ibiza from Formentera, is the habitat of numerous marine species, including barracudas.
Many of our customers and diving enthusiasts have enjoyed their expeditions. rent a boatWe recommend this option to all of them, as it is an affordable option that offers a lot of freedom.
Hi, I'm Davile, dive instructor in Ibiza. For me a perfect day of diving is Plataforma and Dado Pequeño. The first one because of its uniqueness, I think there is nothing like it in the whole Mediterranean. Its size and its spaceship shape are surprising. The second, for its explosion of life and the multiple diving possibilities offered by this rock, small on the surface, but extensive underwater.
Best regards and good blue.
